We haven't always homeschooled. Our children went to preschool. Our oldest son went to public school kindergarten. This was normal. This is what we were supposed to do. The next year we were stationed at a new duty station and zoned for a very poor school. I insisted we homeschool, and as my husband looked around at parents allowing their very small children to roam the neighborhood without supervision, he agreed.
The first year we used MoVIP (Missouri Virtual Instruction Program) and did school-at-home. The program did not work well for us, but I am grateful for it as it gave me the confidence to move forward and continue to homeschool.
Over the years we have used St. Thomas Aquinas Academy, Kolbe Academy, Ambleside Online, Mater Amabilis, All-In-One Homeschool, and I've looked at many, many others. What we have maintained through the years is a Christian, literature-based curriculum. We have found that Singapore Math works very well for us through Level 7A and then they move directly to Foerster's Algebra I in 8th grade. The Robinson Curriculum book list and the self-teaching philosophy have been very influential in our way of life.
We have participated in homeschool groups nearly every place we have lived. The homeschool group in Lebanon, MO (Lebanon Area Homeschoolers) is by far the most active group we have ever been involved with. We very much enjoy the Shared Learning program and various field trips.
